12 Years a Slave
November 8 - December 12, 2013
United Kingdom | 2013 | 133 minutes | Steve McQueen
Ends Thursday December 12! Nominated for seven Independent Spirit Awards, including Best Feature, Best Director, Best Male Lead (Chiwetel Ejiofor), Best Supporting Male (Michael Fassbender), and Best Supporting Female (Lupita Nyong'o).
Director Steve McQueen (Shame) returns with the most widely acclaimed film of the year, a profoundly important portrait of a dark chapter in American history based on Solomon Northup's vivid 1853 memoir. Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), is a free black man from upstate New York with a loving wife and family, who is kidnapped while visiting Washington D.C. and sold into brutal servitude in the deep South. For the next twelve years he faces a life of oppression as he is passed from owner to owner, the most sadistic being drunken madman Edwin Epps (Michael Fassbender). For Solomon, mere survival is not enough–his goal is to live–but as time passes he struggles to retain his dignity. Then, in the twelfth year of his unforgettable odyssey, a chance meeting with a Canadian abolitionist (Brad Pitt) forever alters his life.

"Certain to transcend the movie realm and become a new reference point in contemporary culture-a defining vision of what slavery looked like, and felt like, in the U.S. before the Civil War." - Joe Morgenstern, Wall Street Journal
