Better Off Dead

September 17, 2013

USA | 1985 | 97 Minutes | Savage Steve Holland

Gee, I’m really sorry your mom blew up, Ricky. Guess she won’t be able to eat any spicy foods for a while.

From the director of One Crazy Summer and How I Got into College comes a comedy of broken hearts, Howard Cosell impersonations, and the honor of a ski slope well-traveled. When his girlfriend leaves him for somebody with a nicer car, small-town teenager Lane Meyers (John Cusack) resolves to kill himself. But before he can succeed, into his life walks French exchange student Monique (Diane Franklin), who shows him that life is worth living, even if your best friend is a whippits-snorting career high school student played by Curtis “Booger” Armstrong. The film’s biggest lesson, though? Pay your paperboy well, or he will track you down to the ends of the Earth to retrieve his rightly earned two dollars. - Marcus Gorman
