Barry Lyndon
Stanley Kubrick’s epic adaptation of Thackeray’s 1844 novel about an 18th-century Irish rogue’s rise and fall is, as is always the case with Kubrick, meticulously detailed and brutally honest. Ryan O’Neal has never been better than as the shallow, swaggering half-smart Barry Lyndon, who figures out how to get to the top of the heap but will never know how to stay there. Kubrick’s use of the specially-constructed Zeiss lenses allowed cinematographer John Alcott to film whole interior scenes lit entirely by candlelight.
