$5 Cover: Seattle

Fresh from Sundance 2010, SIFF Cinema and MTV present a special one-night-only screening of Lynn Shelton’s $5 Cover: Seattle. Be the first to see the series alongside many special guests including director Lynn Shelton, Mayor’s Office of Film + Music Director James Keblas, filmmakers John Jeffcoat and Sue Corcoran, cast and crew, and many members of the bands featured in the series including Maldives, Champagne, Champagne, The Lights, Moondoggies, Sean Nelson, and more!

After teaming up to offer a glimpse into the current music of historic Memphis, Tennessee, director Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow, Black Snake Moan) and MTV New Media brought “$5 Cover” to the Pacific Northwest, where the award-winning director of Humpday and resident Seattleite Lynn Shelton took the reins for a new series $5 Cover: Seattle. Shelton brings her intimate, comic style to a community of up-and-coming and undiscovered Seattle bands.

$5 Cover: Seattle is both a long-form rock musical and 12-part series, shot during August 2009 in the city’s clubs bars, crash pads, and streets, showcasing Seattle’s musical diversity. With all the musicians playing themselves in stories drawn from their actual lives, the show will emphasize the authentic intimacy of a living, breathing musical community, as a well as a sweet, deadpan sense of humor.

Focusing on an eclectic group of musicians, $5 Cover: Seattle centers on 13 bands: the disparate group of musicians includes the electro-rapping duo Thee Satisfaction; the punk band Whiskey Tango; discordant indie-rock trio The Lights; the boogie rock and woodsy psychedelia of The Moondoggies; ambient experimental instrumental combo The Correspondents; the outré electronic hip-hop group Champagne, Champagne; singer-songwriter Sean Nelson (formerly of the Seattle-based groups Harvey Danger and the Long Winters); the frantic pop duo Tea Cozies; and many, many more. Seattle might have been known for grunge in the '90s, but the scene has exploded with several different musical flavors, all of which are covered in the Seattle edition.
