Fill the Void

This intimate, insightful, and moving film tells the story of an ultra-Othodox Hassidic family ripe with all the drama and interpersonal conflicts of a Jane Austen novel.
Eighteen-year-old Shira, the youngest daughter of the family, is about to have a dream-come-true match, married off to a promising young man of the same age and background. But tragedy strikes when her older sister Esther dies in childbirth and Esther's widow may leave the country along with the new child. In an effort to keep her only grandchild close, the girls' mother proposes a new match--between Shira and the widower. Shira will now have to choose between her heart's wish and her family duty.
"A provocative, undeniably talented debut from a most unlikely source. With her first dramatic feature, writer-director Rama Burshtein has created a work that is very likely unprecedented: a woman's view of Tel Aviv's ultra-orthodox Hasidic community from the inside." - New York Film Festival
"The compelling story is remarkably focused - even as it hints at such influences as Jane Austen, The Godfather and Fiddler on the Roof - and the emotional stakes lofty, both for the characters onscreen and, especially, the audience...its ending leaves the door open for interpretation and post-viewing discussion - just as the best sort of movie-going experiences often do." - Susan Wloszczna, RogerEbert.com
