Mondays September 9 – October 21 | SIFF Cinema Uptown
Join us for seven classic Japanese Samurai films from the masters of the genre: Kurosawa, Okamota, and Kobayashi. Including both chanbara (action-oriented sword-fight films) and the historical jidai-geki film, Samurai Cinema focuses on the nationally mythologized samurai warriors of the twelfth to sixteenth century. Like the American western, the samurai film lends itself to tales of loyalty, revenge, romance, fighting prowess, and the decline of a traditional way of life, and has influenced generations of filmmakers, including George Lucas and Quentin Tarantino. All films presented by Emerging Pictures in new HD digital restorations from Janus Films.
