God Help The Girl
September 12 - 18, 2014
United Kingdom | 2014 | 111 Minutes | Stuart Murdoch
From indie-pop pioneer Stuart Murdoch comes a delightfully different musical. Over the course of one Glasgow summer, three rootless friends fall in love and form a band–though not in that order. Friday through Sunday screenings include an exclusive 30-minute concert from Belle & Sebastian recorded specially for this release.
Eve (Emily Browning) is a catastrophe—low on self-esteem but high on fantasy, especially when it comes to music. She meets two similarly rootless souls–posh Cass (Hannah Murray) and fastidious James (Olly Alexander)–and together they decide there's only one thing to do: form a pop group.
Writer/director Stuart Murdoch's poignant coming-of-age story is a treat for the eyes and the ears, a sublime musical from one of indie pop's biggest songwriters. The project began as a suite of songs, written while Murdoch was between records and tours as lead singer of Belle & Sebastian. He nurtured it for nearly a decade into a fully formed film, set in the bohemian fantasia of Glasgow's West End, which is populated by mods, rockers, and emo kids who have no qualms about breaking into song and dance.
Friday through Sunday screenings include the short film "Belle & Sebastian Sing God Help the Girl". Recorded live at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival on August 16th, Stuart Murdoch is joined by his Belle & Sebastian bandmates to perform songs from the film, as well as the group's own original music.
