In this tasty, subtle romance a Mumbai office worker (Irrfan Khan) is delivered the wrong lunch by a dabbawala, and finds a note from young housewife (Nimrat Kaur), leading to an unlikely correspondence that will change both of their lives.
Middle class housewife Ila is trying to add some spice to her marriage by preparing a special lunchbox to be delivered to her husband at work. Unbeknownst to her, it is mistakenly delivered to another office worker, Saajan, a lonely man on the verge of retirement. This begins a series of lunchbox notes between the two strangers, and by corresponding solely through notes and food they share little confessions about their loneliness, memories, regrets, fears, hopes, and dreams.
