Nosferatu the Vampyre

March 21 - 23, 2014

Germany | 1979 | 107 Minutes | Werner Herzog

Newly restored German-language version! Werner Herzog's 1979 remake of the F.W. Murnau silent classic stars Klaus Kinski as the guilt-ridden vampire who is obsessed with the lovely Lucy Harker (Isabelle Adjani).

Nosferatu the Vampyre echoes both Bram Stoker's original "Dracula" and Murnau’s silent film, but Herzog's telling of the Harkers' fateful encounter with Transylvanian Count Dracula is an extraordinary retelling, lush with color and visual panache. And that cast! Klaus Kinski is a dead ringer for Max Schreck and plays his vampire with a chilling sense of melancholy, the great Bruno Ganz (Wings of Desire) is the unlucky real estate agent who makes the Count's acquaintance, and Isabella Adjani gives a truly sensual performance as his wife, and Dracula's obsession, Lucy.

For this homage to the classic silent film–at times matching Marnau's film shot-for-shot–Herzog shot two versions simultaneously: one in English for U.S. audiences, and this newly restored German subtitled version with 11 minutes of extra footage.

"I feel the vampire genre is one of the richest and most fertile cinema has to offer. There is fantasy, hallucination, dreams and nightmares, visions, fear and, of course, mythology." - Werner Herzog

"To say of someone that they were born to play a vampire is a strange compliment, but if you will compare the two versions of Nosferatu you might agree with me that only Kinski could have equaled or rivaled Max Schreck's performance." – Roger Ebert, Great Movies | Full review

"An object lesson in the art of the remake. Herzog succeeds in imprinting the material with his own unique sensibility. The result is an earnest homage that also bears unmistakable traces of cinematic one-upmanship." – Budd Wilkins, Slant
