New 4K Restoration! After making The French Connection and The Exorcist, director William Friedkin spent years developing this passion project, a remake of the classic thriller The Wages of Fear, which follows four drivers willing to haul nitroglycerin through 200 miles of treacherous terrain.
Sorcerer shifts Friedkin's trademark urban settings to the depth of South American jungle, where the director's passion for realism and flawless instinct for suspense blend to masterful effect, especially in a nerve-wrecking bridge-crossing scene. The film features an international cast that includes Roy Scheider, Bruno Cremer, Francisco Rabal, and Amidou; a gripping screenplay from The Wild Bunch writer Walon Green; and a haunting soundtrack from electronic group Tangerine Dream.
A box-office flop when originally released (in part due to fierce competition from Star Wars), Sorcerer is Friedkin's personal favorite, and has since grown to be recognized as a masterpiece. However, for years it was nearly impossible to see, mired in legal troubles and with only a few faded 35mm film prints in existence. This stunning new digital restoration was supervised by the director and premiered at the 2013 Venice Film Festival to great acclaim.
"Sorcerer is the one I hope to be remembered for and the one film that came closest to my vision. It was basically lost for 36 years; its restoration is like Lazarus...It looks the way it looked to me when I looked through the lens of the camera." - William Friedkin
