USA | 2013 | 121 Minutes | Alexander Payne
Alexander Payne's acclaimed new comedy follows a cantankerous father (Bruce Dern) who is convinced that he has won a mail-order sweepstakes, wrangling his son (Will Forte) to join him on a road trip to collect a million dollars.
Cantankerous midwesterner Woody Grant (Bruce Dern, in a performance that has been hailed as among the best of his career) thinks he's struck it rich after receiving a sweepstakes entry form in the mail. Ready to claim his winnings, Woody repeatedly attempts to walk from Montana to the contest's Nebraska headquarters, until his son (Will Forte) begrudgingly agrees to drive him. Along they way they become waylaid in Woody's home town of Hawthorne, Nebraska, where the ghosts of Woody's past begin to appear.
A truly unique modern film of family ties and personal secrets, director Alexader Payne (Sideways, The Descendants) captures the true feel of life in America's heartland thanks in part to gorgeous wide-screen black and white cinematography, a pitch-perfect script by Seattle's own Bob Nelson (of "Almost Live" fame), and a supporting cast of actual small town Nebraska natives. Co-stars Stacy Keach and Bob Odenkirk are delightfully real, and June Squibb delivers a brutally funny performance as Woody's acerbic wife.
"Disposing of Red State cliches, condescending superiority and trite sentimentalism, Payne brings rigorous, often goofily amusing insight to this portrayal of his home state….At 76, Dern finally gets to be the leading man he’s long deserved to be, filling Nebraska’s wide open spaces with a performance of subtlety, bittersweetness and surpassing emotional courage." - Ann Hornaday, Washington Post
