Japan | 1954 | 207 Minutes | Akira Kurosawa
Encore screening added, Thursday September 26! Akira Kurosawa's first samurai film is a gripping epic about a village whose desperate inhabitants hire the eponymous warriors to protect them from invading bandits.
One of the most thrilling movie extravaganzas of all time, Seven Samurai features Kurosawa's legendary go-to actors Takashi Shimura and Toshiro Mifune (who was allowed the freedom to improvise much of his role), stunning action and character moments which create a complex mix of philosophy and entertainment, and a mix of delicate human emotions and relentless swordplay. The most expensive and expansive film of the time, Kurosawa's influential vision has been often imitated (most notably in The Magnificent Seven), but never surpassed.
