The Last Starfighter

October 8, 2013

USA | 1984 | 101 Minutes | Nick Castle

Greetings, Starfighter. You have been recruited by the Star League to defend the frontier against Xur and the Ko-Dan armada.

Your parents were wrong—Plunking down hundreds of quarters at the arcade can change the universe. But trailer park joystick junkie Alex (Lance Guest) doesn’t know this… yet. When he achieves an astronomical high score on a space-combat simulator, he receives a visit from the extraterrestrial Centauri (The Music Man’s Robert Preston), is complimented on his victory, and is recruited into defending planet Rylos from the fearsome Xur. But when the distant planet’s military forces are unceremoniously annihilated, Alex becomes, quite literally, Rylos’ last starfighter. Featuring Craig Safan's rousing score, a supporting role from 1980s dream girl Catherine Mary Stewart (Night of the Comet, The Apple), and some sweet early CGI, The Last Starfighter is a Death Blossom of an achievement, a sincere, heartwarming chronicle of the underdog within anybody who ever picked up a game controller. - Marcus Gorman
