Julian Assange started as a computer hacker under the pseudonym Mendax, derived from a phrase meaning "nobly untruthful," before founding a website (some say a movement) that prompted a profound shift in freedom of information and accountability: WikiLeaks. Marshaling anonymous contributors, the site revealed massive corporate cover-ups and government corruption, and gained international attention with a video clip titled "Collateral Murder," which revealed U.S. helicopter pilots in Baghdad gunning down unarmed civilians. The video's source was eventually revealed to be US Army private Bradley Manning, who over time perpetuated the largest leak of classified military documents in the digital era. Manning's story paints a fascinating and complex picture of a troubled soul who is thrust into a military culture of isolation, misunderstanding, and abuse. Meanwhile, Assange's noble persona begins to fall apart as personal attacks and allegations of sexual assault make him even more secretive than those he labored to expose. With exhaustive research, insightful graphics, and probing interviews with key players, Oscar®-winning director Alex Gibney (Taxi to the Dark Side, Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room) digs deep into the story of WikiLeaks, and finds that there are some secrets that may never be revealed.
