About 111 Girls

Darbare 111 Dokhtar

In this charming, satirical road trip movie an Iranian diplomat travels Kurdistan in response to a letter threatening the collective suicide of 111 young women if they are not provided with eligible suitors. Visually stunning with dreamlike reveries and absurd Beckett-esque humor.

About 111 Girls is a satirical road movie about a pompous but empathetic govern- ment bureaucrat sent by the Iranian president himself to investigate the case of 111 young women threatening to jump off a cliff together in the tiny far-off corner of Kurdistan. Due to economic and political strife, there seem to be no prospective husbands around, and these young women are protesting the conditions that have left them spinsters. The bureaucrat, accompanied by an assistant and a little boy who seems to be both guide and interpreter, leads the search to find the women. Shot like a documentary-peppered with real interviews with real locals-the film follows the investigation. Are these girls serious about committing suicide or not? The local residents are reluctant to talk to the minister and he really gets nowhere until he comes to a mountain teahouse where one girl tells him the truth. Absurdly comic, with trenchant insights into issues of marriage and independence, these 111 girls' desperate message is one about respect. Co-presented by the Global Film Initiative, as part of the Global Lens 2013 Film Series.
