Nader and Stefano, two teenagers living in a working-class Roman suburb, spend their days like any number of the world's youths-committing petty crimes, dating whomever they please without any regard to the consequences, and defying their parents. But for Nader, an Egyptian Muslim born in Italy, his rebellion comes with a price. Upset that his parents disapprove of his Italian Christian girl- friend Brigitte, Nader hot-headedly runs away from home, hoping to establish his independence from his family's repressive traditions. Now living on the streets, Nader is forced to intervene on Stefano's behalf, committing an act of violence that only manages to push him further into hiding. Working with natives of Ostia, the film's immigrant-heavy setting, director Claudio Giovannesi has managed to infuse a robust sense of verisimilitude into the work, allowing for a near-documentary feel bound to place the viewer directly into Nader's world.
Claudio Giovannesi was born in Rome in 1978. He studied film directing at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia, Italy’s national cinema school. After graduating, he sneaked onto the sets of director Matteo Garrone to observe how he worked. His first feature-length film, La Casa Sulle Nuvole (2009), won the Special Jury Prize at the Brussels European Film Festival.
