Did punk rock start in England with the Sex Pistols, or in New York with the Ramones? A Band Called Death offers a new theory: Detroit, 1974. It was there that three brothers from a working-class black neighborhood created a pioneering and uncompromising group with the most punk rock of band names: Death. Born to Motown-loving Catholic parents, David, Bobby and Dannis Hackney formed their own rock-influenced funk band, rehearsing daily in a makeshift bedroom studio. Their driving creative force was the energetic and imaginative David. After the tragic death of their father, he embraced a new vision exploring the reality of death in their music and imagery. After recording one scorching single, "Politicians in My Eyes," and an album, David refused to sacrifice the band's controversial name in exchange for a record deal. Thirty years later, Bobby's son discovers that the band's single has become a highly sought after collector's item, and their entire career is reborn. Directors Jeff Howlett and Mark Covino's A Band Called Death is the punk version of Oscar®-winning documentary Searching for Sugar Man, an electrifying tale of musical expression, and a family chronicle of brotherly love.
Prior to making A Band Called Death, musician Jeff Howlett directed music videos. It was on the set of a music video that he met co-director Mark Covino, who was very involved in the local film community. Both went to film school in Vermont.
