Working with his longtime collaborator Wai Ka-fai, Hong Kong action auteur Johnnie To takes his distinctive brand of operatic crime drama to Mainland China. Following the explosion of his illegal amphetamine production plant, Choi ends up in the hospital where he falls into the custody of Tianjin police Inspector Zhang. In order to save himself from the death penalty, Choi agrees to help Zhang and his partner Xiao Bei infiltrate the cartel led by the infamous drug kingpin "Uncle Bill" Li. Zhang adopts the identity of Brother HaHa, embarking upon a dark and dangerous deep cover operation with only Choi as his guide. However, right before Zhang's squad is about to crack the case, he realizes the relationship between Choi and Li may not be what it seems. Like a cross between The French Connection and The Wire, Drug War is a tense, gritty police procedural that is as uncompromising as it is exhilarating.
Jonnie To has been in the working in the world of film since age 17, when he was a messenger for a Hong Kong TV studio, eventually working his way up to producing and directing TV shows for them.
