Frances Ha

Frances, a post-college aspiring dancer, struggles after her best friend falls in love and moves out. In the vein of television's Girls, Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale) treats his characters candidly but lovingly, as they work to become adults in Brooklyn.

27-year-old Frances lives in New york, sharing an apartment with her best friend Sophie. But when Sophie decides to move to her dream loft in Tribeca with another friend, Frances is left to find a new place for herself, in more ways than one. The film follows her progress through half a dozen short, and shorter-term, living arrangements, crashing with some rich friends one month, flying home to Sacramento the next, even making a spontaneous weekend trip to Paris. Housing issues aside, the fact is that several years after graduation, she finds herself in a seemingly perpetual post- collegiate phase, unable to make the transition to real adulthood, whatever that might turn out to be. Worse still, she's struggling to find her own path amongst friends who seem to have it all figured out. Shot in black-and-white in a style reminiscent of the French New Wave, this new film from director Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale, Margot at the Wedding) reunites him in happy collaboration with star and co-writer Greta Gerwig.

Director Biography
Noah Baumbach started his career in 1995 at the age of 26 with his film Kicking and Screaming starring Josh Hamilton and earned his first Academy Award nomination® in 2005 for writing the semi-autobiographical The Squid and the Whale. He recently worked with Wes Anderson on the screenplay of The Fantastic Mr. Fox and won the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival for his 2010 film Greenberg.
