This black-and-white wartime drama unfolds in Soviet Russia as an eight-year-old boy travels back to Ukraine from Moscow with his sick mother. Traveling toward his grandfather, they end up in an unknown war-torn town where the boy's mother is transported to a nearby hospital. In the uncertain times of WWII, who will help him find the house with the turret where his relatives live? Who can help when everyone is desperately entrenched in their own survival? Director Eva Neymann's touching film creates a stunning visual journey into a country covered in snow and left poor by war. This is a place of beautiful, deserted landscapes and people over-come by both need and greed. The tranquil black and white images created by Lithuanian cameraman Rimmvydas Leipus masterfully evoke the atmosphere of the times. The film is based on the autobiographical story by writer and screenwriter Friedrich Gorenstein, who penned the script for Andrei Tarkovsky's Solaris and Nikita Mikhalkov's A Slave of Love. House With a Turret is a take on old-fashioned filmmaking of the very highest quality.
Before deciding to pursue film directing, Ukraine-born Neymann spent her time studying to become a lawyer. Having produced and written short stories and documentaries, she directed her first feature At the River in 2007.
