Mussels in Love is a tasty documentary that reveals the love life of the Netherlands’ Zeeland mussel. The mussel’s complete life cycle is minutely examined: the mussel that loves, the mussel that holds on with all its might, and the mussel that is cast off by the storm. The Belgians and French look forward to eating them with bated breath. On its odyssey from seabed to restaurant plate, the mussel encounters passionate enthusiasts who, like itself, fall in love, struggle, and overcome. Biologist Annelies Pronker introduces us to the sex life of mussels. Then she becomes pregnant. Top chef Sergio Herman, after a love-hate relationship with the mussel, now specializes in preparing them. Gynecologist Jan Deprest uses the glue of mussels to save the lives of unborn babies. A quirky music score by Tuur Florizoone, and the orgasmic extreme close-ups of director of photography Remko Schnorr (The Pervert’s Guide to Ideology), gives this shellfish romance a look of abstract art and makes it much more than just a dry exploration of bivalves. Be prepared to see shellfish erotica like you’ve never seen before and delve deep into the love life of bibalvia mollusca, the humble, hardy, and sexy mussel.
