While Seattle is known by music fans around the world as the birthplace of Jimi Hendrix and grunge rock, few have realized that there is a new sound developing in the Pacific Northwest. Seattle’s underground hip-hop artists are redefining the genre as they attempt to capitalize on the music world’s current, do-it-yourself, digital age. Director Daniel Torok traveled around the country, documenting the burgeoning national presence of the Seattle hip-hop scene. Mixing interviews together with concert footage, the filmmakers have created a nearly encyclopedic Who’s Who of the up-and-coming artists that comprise this movement: Blue Scholars, Dyme Def, Jake One, Larry Mizell, Jr., Don’t Talk to the Cops, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Shabazz Palaces, and many more. Following the artists into their homes, studios, and performances, The Otherside examines their daily struggles for success as they reach for stardom. Don’t miss your chance to get a firsthand look at the diverse mix of talent that defines Pacific Northwest hip-hop.
Daniel Torok’s past projects include Fire & Ice, a short he made after filming several months on an Arctic icebreaker, and Guarding the Coast of Antarctica, a self-produced album recorded with Grammy nominated artists four months after Torok taught himself to play the guitar.
