Writer-director Gregory Collins (Thokozani) brings a degree of authenticity and empathy to A Song Still Inside that infuses his characters with a spark of reality seldom seen in narrative filmmaking. As the story of Michael and Maggie unfolds, the audience begins to understand the motivations behind their sometimes difficult-to-fathom decisions, revealing Collins' deep connection to his characters and their struggles. Becoming a new parent while trying to launch your career is a daunting task for most people. But, when Michael (Rodrigo Lopresti) and Maggie (Susan Highsmith) both have opportunities that may finally cement their careers in the creative arts, they're faced with a dilemma that offers no easy solution. With neither of them willing to sacrifice their big break, they each embark on a series of potentially destructive decisions that explore the nature not only of what it means to be in a relationship, but also of how that dynamic evolves when a child is added to the equation. Leads Susan Highsmith and Rodrigo Lopresti bring life and depth to writer-director Gregory Collins' portrait of young parents in conflict. In doing so, they explore ages-old questions about the nature of sacrifice, parenthood, and inter-generational relationships.
Born and raised in Kenya, Gregory has worked in film and film production for over ten years on films including Infamous, Sin City, The Quiet, and Elvis & Anabelle. Gregory co-wrote and co-produced Melvin, a 2010 IFP Narrative Lab selection, which is a tense character study about a young man coming undone. Gregory was selected to pitch his script High Context, a 2012 Sundance Screenwriters Lab semifinalist, at IFP’s 2011 Script to Screen Conference. A Song Still Inside is Gregory’s first feature film.
