Storm Surfers 3D takes sports filmmaking to the next level by creating a truly immersive sensory experience like none other: sliding through a mountainous pipe of water, wiping out in spectacular fashion, and surfing the world's craziest waves from the very front of the board. Ross Clarke-Jones and Tom Carroll, surfing legends who are still going strong even as they approach middle age, search for the holy grail of waves 75 kilometers off the coast of Australia, some of the most audacious and dangerous surfing terrain in the world. Braving extreme conditions and near-death experiences, they are aided in their search by meteorologist Ben Matson, who reverently follows weather patterns to determine where the biggest, wildest waves will appear. Directors Justin McMillan and Chris Nelius wisely avoid simply pasting together a series of "Oh wow!" moments (though there are plenty of those) by also presenting the delightful life-long friendship of this surfing duo, and their thrilling quest for the ultimate rush. When the surfboards hit those unbelievable waves in all their heart-stopping, giant-screen, three-dimensional glory, you can practically smell the salt water in the air.
Justin McMillan and Chris Nelius are a Sydney-based documentary director-writer-producer partnership that began in 2006 with the making of Sixth Element: The Ross Clarke-Jones Story, which was narrated by Dennis Hopper and released globally on DVD.
