In his final film, director Claude Miller has crafted a masterful adaptation of François Mauriac's legendary 1927 novel of French provincial life. Thérèse Desqueyroux (Audrey Tautou) is a woman trapped in a loveless marriage to her dull and pompous landowning neighbor. Her only consolations are the vast pine forests that surround their estate and her friendship with her sister-in-law Anne. But when Anne falls head over heels for a handsome Portuguese student, Thérèse begins to awaken to what has been missing from her life. Enlisted by her husband's family to dissuade Anne from pursuing her affair, she witnesses first hand the power of passionate love and is inspired to plot a rebellion of her own. Tautou is marvelous in the title role, bringing to life a complex heroine in the tradition of Emma Bovary and Anna Karenina. Set and shot in the magnificent forests of the Landes area in southwest France.
Claude Miller started as an assistant to Robert Bresson on Balthazar, Jacques Demy on Les demoiselles de Rochefort, and Jean-Luc Godard on Weekend. From 1968 to 1975, he was production manager on all of François Truffaut’s films excepting Day For Night. From 1985 to 1993, Miller created a teenage trilogy: Cheeky Child and The Little Thief starring Charlotte Gainsbourg, and The Accompanist starring Romane Bohringer. In 1998, Miller presented Class Trip at the Cannes Film Festival and won the Jury Prize. He returned to Cannes in 2001 as a member of the jury and again in 2003 for his film LIttle Lili. Throughout his career, Miller has actively participated in the debate on cinema in France.
