For many young boys in Karachi, Pakistan, running away is a risk that facilitates an escape from a hurtful home, but also acts as a demonstration of defiance and independence. These Birds Walk opens a transparent dialogue with Abdul Sattar Edhi, founder of the EDHI Foundation, and showcases his devotion and organization's immeasurable impact. The EDHI Foundation is the largest welfare organization in Pakistan and is also one of the few resources for young runaways. This documentary focuses on a dedicated ambulance driver and the young runaways he is reuniting with their families. Through this process we learn of the struggles and outlooks of those involved. We hear the young boys imagining their overwhelming reception by family and neighbors, while their faces betray their dreams. We hear the staff lamenting over politics and gas prices, while faced with parents that are unable to pay for the proper burial of their children. The story eschews narrative, allowing its subjects to intimately connect with the audience, with much of the story being shown through the eyes of the children and ambulance driver.
