Paul Eenhoorn stars as Martin Bonner, an older gentleman starting a new life in Reno, NV. He's gotten a job for a Christian organization that helps prisoners transition back to civilian life once they're released, despite having fallen away from the church. Meanwhile, Travis Holloway (Richmond Arquette) has just been released after serving 12 years. Travis adopts Martin as a mentor and an unlikely friendship forms. Director Chad Hartigan has pulled together a quietly observational film that is naturalistic and never boring. Martin fills his weekends by going to auctions and selling his purchases on eBay... and it's fascinating! He referees at kids' soccer games... because he enjoys it! The details are all so believable, thanks to great writing and expert performances, that it's easy to see why it won an audience award at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. Though it was made on a shoestring budget, This Is Martin Bonner is less of a youth-obsessed American indie and more like a confident European art film. It's the kind of movie that not only makes you glad you saw it, it makes you feel good.
