Lil (Naomi Watts) and Roz (Robin Wright) have been best friends since childhood. In middle age, they find themselves still close, now single (Lil a divorcée, Roz a widower), with adult sons, Tom and Ian, who are also friends. With summer upon them, the group spends their days sunning on the beach and swimming in the sea. One night after a dinner at which everyone has had a bit too much to drink, Tom makes a pass at Lil. When Ian discovers their secret shortly afterward, he follows suit with Roz. But what begins as a Chardonnay-fueled misstep soon takes on a life of its own, with repercussions that prove hard to predict or contain. Director Anne Fontaine (Coco Before Chanel) handles her material with intelligence and empathy, avoiding easy answers to the complicated questions sometimes raised by the human heart. Based on a novella by British Nobel Laureate Doris Lessing.
Anne Fontaine, also an acclaimed actress, made her cinematic directing debut in 1993 with the award-winning feature Les histoires d'amour finissent mal...en général. Her following feature, Dry Cleaning (1997), won Best Screenplay at the Venice Film Festival, and Coco Before Chanel (2009) was nominated for a BAFTA Award.
