Sokurov's most directly political work for years, May 19, 2008

    By JAY WEISSBERG

“Though he's sure to deny it, "Alexandra" is Alexander Sokurov's most directly political work for years. Featuring a performance of monumental depth by opera legend Galina Vishnevskaya, pic presents war for what it is: brutal, crushing, and ugly, and yet Sokurov doesn't lens any battles. These” … full review

An Oscar for Vishnevskaya, May 19, 2008

    By Michael McGonigle

“Alexandra is a film of deceptive simplicity. An older grandmother comes to a remote military base to visit her 27-year-old grand son who is a captain. While there, she is treated as an honored guest, almost like a beloved mascot and she gets to meet many different soldier boys as well as some of” … full review

    By Chris Knipp

“"'Alexandra'," Sokurov has said in an interview, "is a film about the ability of people to understand each other, about all that is best in a person. It is about people and the fact that the main thing for people is other people and that there are no greater values than kindness, understanding and” … full review

Seattle Weekly Pick Alexandra, Jun 02, 2008

    By J. Hoberman

“Spare yet tactile, a mysterious mixture of lightness and gravity, Alexander Sokurov's Alexandra is founded on contradiction. Musing on war in general and the Russian occupation of Chechnya in particular, this is a movie in which combat is never shown. The star, octogenarian Galina Vishnevskaya, is” … full review

    Artistic Audacity, Jun 03, 2008

    By William Adams

“Russian writers and artists often complain that creativity has declined since the lifting of most censorship. Alexandra shows what can be done with a politically sensitive and forbidden topic, in this case the Russian war in Chechnya, right under the noses of the authorities. It is a blatant” … full review
