2008 Secret Festival
Long ago that irascible French scamp Voltaire said that the secret of being a bore is to tell everything. Harry Potter had his Chamber of Secrets. Nicolas Cage had his Book of Secrets and SIFF has the Secret Festival. Never heard of it? That’s because it’s a….a….work with us here. That’s right, it’s a secret!
How do we keep such a major event secret? Because only members of our innermost circle, our clandestine Society of the Secret Festival may attend these off-the-record screenings. Society members must sign the dreaded Oath of Silence—in the vernacular that’s a promise to keep your yap shut…forever!
What might you see? It could be a new film, just waiting to be released, or a rarely seen archival film. It could be a one-of-a-kind print recovered from a subterranean vault where it was guarded by a cryptic series of traps, each more diabolic than the last. It could be a foreign language masterpiece, smuggled out of a remote country in pieces by being hidden inside the glass eyes of a caravan of one-eyed circus clowns, and then reassembled on an off-shore drilling platform by nimble-fingered grey aliens who’re being held captive by the CIA.
You just never know. That is, unless you’re in on the secret.
