Hansel and Gretel

People who love houses made of candy will be disappointed by this version of Hansel and Gretel . All others prepare for an outré, Tim Burton-esque fever dream. On a business trip, Lee Eun-soo drives down a wooded road, talking on his cell phone to his girlfriend. He swerves to avoid a piece of road kill and ends up crashing his car. Dazed by the accident, he wanders the woods until nightfall, when he meets a mysterious young girl who leads him to her home, the “House of Happy Children,” secluded in the middle of the forest. Once there, the girl’s too-perfect family welcomes him as if he were one of their own. Following breakfast the next morning, Eun-soo tries to get back to his car only to find all the forest paths lead back to the House of Happy Children. Taking the tropes from the famous Grimm fairytale, director Yim Phil-sung spins them into his own unique, surreal interpretation of the original, where the kitsch and the creepy mingle together in every scene.

GO SEE! GO SEE! GO SEE!, May 27, 2009

    By Mimi Noyes

“This appears to be one of those movies that you will either LOVE or ... not. I don't think anyone actively hated it, but I heard a number of people commenting on it in a very non-plussed way as I left the theater tonight. Personally, I'm astonished at how one could not think that this film was” … full review

A great beginning with an extended finale, May 28, 2009

    By Christopher Coronado

“The first 2/3 of this movie goes by like nothing. Well, the first 2 acts of the movie, I should say. The final act seems to be 4 times as long as the first 2 acts. The art direction and cinematography is amazing. The acting is great as well, in that kind of crazy Korean sort of way. But,” … full review

    New genre?, May 28, 2009

    By Michael Adcock

“This is not a typical Korean horror film, nor is it a typical fairytale. Instead, it blends the two together into something completely new and amazing. You get taken on a visually stunning, creepy, and sometimes emotional ride and when you're done you realize the entire thing had a lot of depth” … full review

“It wasn't very good at all. Somewhat interesting visuals, but thats about it. Lots of overused, tired, horror cliches. ”

“a muddled mess. i usually ADORE korean films, especially horror, i was hoping for tale of two sisters, but this was a cross between the orphanage and who knows what. i thought since the director had worked with joon bong-ho (siff faves memories of murder, the host), this was a sure thing. nope.” … full review
