(500) Days of Summer

Boy meets girl. Boy falls in love. Girl doesn’t. Surprising in its outcome, Marc Webb’s debut feature film is a charming postmodern reflection on crushing, unrequited love and relationships, dispensed in a nonlinear structure. Starting at day 488, the narration jumps back and forth to different days in the 500-day love affair. From day one Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is completely smitten by new co-worker Summer (Zooey Deschanel). He believes in the possibility of soul mates destined to meet, while she believes that true love is only a fairy tale never to be experienced, and so her interest in Tom is purely lighthearted fun. Gordon-Levitt’s and Deschanel’s nuanced portrayals of roller coaster love and the mercurial, ungraspable object of one’s affection almost move this story out of romantic comedy and into tragedy. The comedic tone, vigorous shots, and effervescent music keep it light in the most satisfying way. Director Marc Webb expected to attend both screenings

Romantic comedy with a few twists, May 28, 2009

    By Mimi Noyes

“This is a sweet romantic comedy about when boy meets girl … but it is not a love story, according to the film’s introduction. I’d say that point is debateable. It’s certainly a love story, it’s just not a very happy one; a story of love one-side and thwarted. But really it’s more of a life story, a” … full review

Creative story-telling, realistic main characters, Jun 09, 2009

    By Jean Yang

“Many people think of SIFF films as mostly foreign or overly artsy, but this film was both domestic and accessible. After watching the trailer, several of my friends thought it might be "a huge chick flick," but all of us, both male and female, enjoyed the movie. I assume we were not alone, because” … full review

A wonderfully told modern love story, Jun 09, 2009

    By Zheng Wang

“Fans of clever romance movies rejoice! This one could be a new classic. Utilizing a successful non-linear time structure, this movie is filled with genuine emotions and subtle humor, with stories and characters that are highly relatable. (According to director Marc Webb, some scenes and dialogues” … full review

    Great directing!, Jun 11, 2009

“First off, I want to say, Kudos to the director. I was really impressed with his vision for this film. I look forward to seeing more of his work! Also, I am a huge Zooey Deschanel supporter, and found this character to be a tad bit too cliched for its own good. I thought at times the dialogue was a” … full review

both crushing and hopeful, just like life, Jun 11, 2009

    By Anca Scaesteanu

“This movie deserves a spot next to "When Harry Met Sally" in my dvd collection. The movie jumps back and forth in the storyline, which was a clever way to lay out the plot, but you have to pay attention, so you can keep track of how much time elapses between various key events. Great use of music.” … full review
