Boy

Acclaimed Filipino director Aureaus Solito adds to a string of critically successful features that began with his debut, The Blossoming of Maximo Oliveros (SIFF 2006). Boy is the funny, touching story of an up-and-coming poet who becomes smitten by a dancing rent-boy named Aries. Selling his prized collection of comic books and action figures, the poet, who goes unnamed, gathers enough money together that he can bring Aries home on New Year’s Eve. The connection between the two central characters is sweet and fragile in a way that brings a freshness to the film. Boy explores the relationship as a life-changing moment as the sensitive poet learns to grow more confident and assured in his sexuality. Recently banned prior to its intended world premiere in Singapore, BOY demonstrates its director’s growing poise and talent. Anyone who caught Maximo Oliveros (in which a 12-year-old boy from a family of criminals falls in love with a policeman) will know that Boy brings an inventive and delicate sensibility to this authentic gay story. Producers Mig Gomez and Jong de Castro expected to attend both screenings

Sweet coming of age film, Jun 01, 2009

“This was a nice follow up to the Blossoming Of Maximo Oliveros. It is a well done telling of a fairly simple story. My only complaint would be that some of the choreographed scenes go on for too long. ”

It wasn't terrible, but I laughed at the wrong parts, Jun 12, 2009

    By Jonathan Hamilton

“It was certainly an interesting cultural film. And the poems were, in a hyphenated word, awe-inspiring. But overall, it just wasn't all that good. The sex scene was long and sexy. Highly recommended for teens who just became aware of their sexuality. ”
