Ruan Ling-yu (THE GODDESS) plays Lingu, a peasant girl who falls in love with the landlord's son and bears his child. He promises marriage, but he is forbidden to see her much less help her. Director Bu used melodrama to thwart government censors and show contrast and conflict between the classes.
