This year we are thrilled to be aboe to bring you two very special archival presentations, Charlie Chaplin's masterpiece THE CIRCUS, and PEACH GIRL, Bu Wancang's bio-pic of legendary Chinese actress Ruan Ling-yu.

    The Circus

    USA, 1928, 71 min.

    A rarely-seen masterpiece featuring two of the greatest comic sequences ever filmed. The lovable Tramp finds work as a circus janitor, only to be drafted in to replace the wayward feature acts. With a score composed by Chaplin at age 79, this is one of the must-see events of the festival.

  • Peach Girl
    Peach Girl

    China, 1931, 100 min.

    Live musical accompaniment by Donald Sosin Ruan Ling-yu (THE GODDESS) plays Lingu, a peasant girl who falls in love with the landlord's son and bears his child. He promises marriage, but he is forbidden to see her much less help her. Director Bu used melodrama to thwart government censors and show contrast and conflict between the classes.
