As a young man, Michael Glatze, the out-and-proud co-founder of the group Young Gay America and former managing editor of “XY Magazine,” was seen as a hero to a generation of gay teenagers in the early 2000s for his activism in support of same-sex relationships and his writings about queer theory and gender identity. In 2007, however, after a health scare, Glatze made a profound philosophical reversal by embracing fundamentalist Christianity. He alienated and enraged his friends by not only renouncing his own homosexuality but by actively counseling teenagers against it, preaching that “homosexuality is death.” In I Am Michael, James Franco (127 Hours, Spring Breakers) stars as the conflicted and conflict-attracting Glatze, who today calls himself “cured” of his previous “lifestyle.” Despite the polarizing nature of the gay-conversion subject matter, first-time director Justin Kelly (working with producer Gus Van Sant) tells Glatze’s story through the character’s eyes, portraying him even-handedly as a complex, genuine seeker of his own fluid sexual identity. Evincing strong reactions at both Sundance and Berlin, I Am Michael has been a magnet for controversy that’s guaranteed to inspire lively discussions long after you’ve left the theater.
