Bangladeshi actress Roya has played the character Nandini in Rabindranath Tagore's play Red Oleanders for nine years and is "aging out" of the role, even though she's barely 30. With her theatrical career uncertain, Roya must also contend with her husband, who wants a child even though Roya may not be interested in motherhood. Opportunity knocks in the form of a curator who wants to represent Bangladesh for a series of European theater festivals, and he won't do it without Roya. Tasked with representing her country, Roya reclaims and reconstructs the message of "Red Oleanders" by setting the politically minded play in contemporary times.

About "Red Oleanders"
A symbolic play written in 1923-24, "Red Oleanders" is Tagore's, powerful and poignant story that describes the conflict between machine and free spirit. The character of Nandidni is a symbol of undying love. It is a play about the suffering and hope of our modern times.
