Willem Dafoe's hearty, soft voice narrates this cinematically stunning ode to the world's mountain peaks and humanity's fascination with conquering them, bolstered with a score by the Australian Chamber Orchestra.
Just a few centuries ago, mountain ranges of the world were to be feared and revered, not climbed and surveyed. Believed to be the home of all things both terrifying and holy, humans respectfully avoided their peaks. But as urbanization underscored our species and we insulated ourselves from nature, the mountains called us back out to the world. Fascination replaced trepidation, and obsession soon followed, eventually to nature's detriment. Yet despite our best efforts to control their paths, mountains remain unbeholden to the whims of humanity, evidenced by climbing and mountaineering accidents that will never fully disappear. Mountain follows the love story between the human species and the sky-tearing mountains of the world as it's developed in recent history. A cinematic marvel, this documentary is an artistic collaboration between filmmaker Jennifer Peedom and the Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO), deftly narrated by Oscar®-nominated actor Willem Dafoe. Rock and ice towers populating the world from Switzerland to Nepal to Papua New Guinea are featured with sharp aerial shots spanning wide expanses. ACO's music flows through the film like a mountain river giving life to each scene in a way no script could provide. If transcendentalist writers stove to articulate the sublime with their words, knowing the task nigh impossible, Mountain comes as close as our imaginations will allow.
Australian director Jennifer Peedom is often considered an adventure filmmaker for following multiple summit excursions in her body of work. Her overarching goal is to convey a female perspective within subjects that are often male-dominated and to inspire other women to shamelessly defend their ideas.
