Canada | 2017 | 110 minutes | Kathleen Hepburn

In this carefully rendered, beautifully framed study of grief and identity by Canadian director Kathleen Hepburn, Shirley Henderson stars as a woman dealing with Parkinson's disease, while her son struggles with his sexuality while working at an oil field work camp.

Judy (Shirley Henderson, Okja, Meek's Cutoff) lives in bucolic northern British Colombia with her supportive husband Eddie (Nicholas Campbell, "Da Vinci's Inquest") and shy teenage son Jamie (Theodore Pellerin, It's Only the End of the World). Theirs is a family built on love and the men seem to be up to the challenge of caring for Judy, who suffers from Parkinson's disease, but it's just about time for 18-year-old Jamie to go out and get a good paying job. Finding work as an oil field driller, the aimless teen is dropped into a brutal, insular society of unchecked masculinity, finding he needs to shape up immediately or succumb to the treachery of this testosterone-fueled world. And then tragedy strikes. As Jamie contends with the violence of Alberta's oil field work camps as well as his own sexual confusion, Judy struggles to take control of her life as her degenerative disorder intensifies. Never Steady, Never Still, the first feature film from writer/director Kathleen Hepburn, is a nuanced, compassionate, and carefully rendered study of grief and identity, cinematically shot among the mountains and lakes of Canada's west coast with a soft palette and keen eye for composition.
