Scotch - A Golden Dream
The distillation of Scotch whiskey, whose Gaelic name means "water of life," is a centuries-old practice. Journey to the Scottish countryside to uncover the history of the craft and meet some of the biggest names in the industry in a revealing look at how Scotch became the premiere spirit of choice around the globe.
Crisp, smooth, and with an ethereal touch to the aftertaste. Sounds like a sip of some quality single malt. But that also describes Andrew Peat's documentary highlighting the scotch whiskey industry, its background characters, and what it means to Scottish culture as a whole. The narrative paces through some Scottish history and whiskey's development. The relationship between Scottish barley farmers and distilleries is a symbiotic one and current distillers constantly work to strengthen that connection. Meanwhile, some of the industry's biggest names recount their virginal experiences with serious drams of scotch throughout the film. Master blender Ian MacMillan recalls taking his introductory 8am dram to start his first shift as an 18-year-old at the fabled Glengoyne Distillery; while his superiors downed it like fruit juice, Ian was almost knocked unconscious. 40-plus years, later one might say he's perfected the practice. Nearly every aspect of whiskey production is examined under a loving eye, from the relationship between cask wood and flavor to the old vs. young whiskey debate. Ultimately, Peat has put together a genuine ode to the "blood of Scotland," as people affectionately refer to it.
Andrew Peat's family migrated to America from Glasgow when he was a child, and he went on to receive a Masters of Fine Arts from the USC School of Cinematic Arts. He is also the Director of Taiwanese media company, Island Productions Ltd. While studying at St. Andrew's University in Scotland, he developed a knowledge and passion for whiskey and channeled it into directing his first documentary feature, Scotch - A Golden Dream.
