7 Lakes, 7 Lives

Spain | 2021 | 105 min | Víctor Escribano

April 14 - 24, 2022

Wracked by ALS and ready to challenge anyone who denies him dignity, Dabiz Riaño explores the scenic lakes of Eastern Europe with an outfitted van and two lively assistants in this ode to the struggles of being differently-abled and the wonder of being alive.

Smart, cheeky, and ready for a challenge, Dabiz Riaño once had everything to look forward to. A Fulbright Scholar with a successful career and a loving marriage, the Spanish researcher unexpectedly lost the dexterity in his right hand, leading to a diagnosis of ALS: amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a degenerative condition that attacks the central nervous system and for which there’s no known cure. Now confined to a wheelchair yet not one to be slowed, Riaño sets out on his grandest adventure yet: six months traversing Eastern Europe, swimming in its most scenic lakes where his body can once again be unburdened, free. Armed with a GoPro camera, a tricked-out van, and the help of two nervy assistants, the scientist soon discovers how high the deck is stacked against persons with disabilities while taking in the beauty of the natural world in this touching ode to the struggles of being differently-abled and the wonder of being alive from Victor Escribano.
