Faye (Dale Dickey, Winter’s Bone) has unhitched her trailer by a lake at a campsite in southwest Colorado. As she bides her time—catching and cooking crawfish, searching for a station on her transistor radio, listening to the birdsong—the great mountains in the distance tower over her, magnifying her solitude. Faye is in her 60s and has been a widow for seven years now, though instead of hitting the road in search of herself Nomadland-style, she has firmly planted herself here for a reason: She is waiting for a childhood sweetheart to arrive, somebody she hasn’t seen in decades. Though she perks up anytime she sees a vehicle in the distance, she experiences the same melancholy when it turns out to be the mailman or another set of campers. But one fateful day, Lito (Wes Studi, The New World) finally arrives. A widower himself, he is just as ecstatic to see her as she him. As they spend an evening reminiscing about their lives, losses, and loneliness, maybe there’s a chance to rekindle this flame. In his feature debut, writer/director Max Walker-Silverman has crafted a truly remarkable drama, careful and vulnerable and achingly romantic, with Dickey giving a career-best performance in a rare leading role.
