Russia | 2018 | 114 minutes | Sergey Mokritskiy

Action-packed, mind-bending adventure awaits a videogame designer after he is stripped of his identity and recruited by a mysterious force to be the gatekeeper of a multi-dimensional portal in this Russian science-fiction thriller from the makers of Battle of Sevastopol. Ages 15+

Director Sergey Mokritskiy (Battle for Sevastopol, SIFF 2016) returns with a sci-fi/action hybrid that delivers high-concept creativity and riveting set pieces. Kirill (Nikita Volkov) has a perfect life. He's a young man with a game programming job, parents who care about him, and a fabulous girlfriend...until all of that is erased. He wakes up to discover that everyone has forgotten who he is and there is even someone else living in his house. As he searches for an explanation, Kirill learns through a mysterious woman (Severija Janusauskaite) that he is the new gatekeeper inside an unassuming circular building that provides access to over a dozen parallel worlds. Pretty soon, it becomes apparent that Kirill is in over his head and that someone above him is a puppet master who controls the multiple realities, leaving him to wonder if our world is real or just another fabrication. Adapted from the bestselling novel by the author of Night Watch, Sergey Lukyanenko, A Rough Draft defies expectation at every turn and delights with the creativity in which it builds its complicated world. One thing's for certain: After this film, you will never see a Russian Matroyshka doll the same way again.
