Antonio Lopez 1970: Sex Fashion & Disco
Immerse yourself in the disco-era world of Puerto Rican-born fashion icon Antonio Lopez, who upended the industry with his vibrant illustrations while painting the town with friends and lovers including Karl Lagerfeld, Grace Jones, Jessica Lange, and Jerry Hall.
"The great miracle of the film is how bright, gleaming, and alive it feels. Each moment of the screen time breathes and pulsates." Adam Hobbins - The Knockturnal
Exploring the energy and intrigue of the seventies through the narratives of industry legends, Antonio Lopez 1970: Sex Fashion & Disco paints a portrait of a man whose lust for life was transcendent. As a fashion illustrator, his renderings of reality inspired a space where beauty and expression reigned supreme. Director James Crump's documentary outlines Lopez's massive influence that remains palpable decades after his passing in 1987. Shattering boundaries of sexuality, fashion, diversity, and culture across the world, Lopez represents the pinnacle of twentieth century liberation. Set to a soundtrack of disco hits and incorporating archival footage and iconic images, Crump beautifully depicts a counter-culture posse of designers and their it-girls that ran the streets of New York City and Paris. With decadence, glamour, and lack of inhibition illustrated as the recipe for trendsetting, audiences will be transported to St. Tropez swimming with Karl Lagerfeld, Max's Kansas City dancing with Andy Warhol, and Lopez's Carnegie Hall studio being painted beside the likes of Jerry Hall and Grace Jones. Like stepping into a time machine, Crump's feature is a love letter to the incomparable nature of the late sixties and seventies and the man whose life's work defined it.
Along with being an acclaimed American director, producer and writer, James Crump is an author of several literary works and a notable historian and curator. His focus lies in modern and contemporary art, which he studied at Indiana University and the University of New Mexico. His directorial debut, Black White + Gray, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2007 and he continues to produce documentary features centered on art influencers of the 20th century.
