Before the Vows
In this rom-com, two enamored young Ghanaians seem perfect for each other, but their parents' strained marriages and feelings for old flames engender doubts about the very institution itself.
Meet Afua, a modern Ghanaian woman who is engaged to Nii. But Afua doesn't believe in marriage. She is surrounded by her divorced parents and Nii's still-married-but-constantly-bickering parents… and she is starting to doubt her commitment to her own wedding, just a short time away. What is a bride-to-be to do? Writer/director Nicole Amarteifio sets up an unconventional solution that seems destined to destroy their union… or is it the perfect knot from which to untie their pre-wedding jitters? Amarteifio is the creative force behind "An African City," the hit web series featuring a quartet of single African women climbing the corporate ladder of Accra. It's much more than just a "Sex and the City" clone, and Amarteifio brings her African-feminist landscape to Before the Vows. Afua and Nii are not the usual rom-com zombies doing stupid things as required by the plot; they are overthinking marriage to the point that only the absurd will bring them back to understanding their true love for each other. This distinctly African romantic comedy is perfectly calibrated to allow you to sit back and enjoy the ride, with an effervescent young cast and a scenario that has to be seen to be believed.

Born in Accra, Amarteifio's family fled for London when she was three months old amid a series of political coups, and relocated to Westchester, New York when she was six.
