Italy | 2017 | 86 minutes | Alessandro Rak, Ivan Cappiello, Marino Guarnieri, Dario Sansone

The classic Cinderella tale gets a dystopic adult animated update when a mute servant girl living aboard a technologically advanced luxury liner in a decaying retro-futuristic Naples port discovers she is to be married off to a drug dealer by her wicked stepmother.

"With its slick, creative animation and enjoyable tunes, Cinderella the Cat is one of the best Italian animated films of recent years." Jay Weissberg - Variety

The classic fairytale gets a dark, stylized re-do in this Italian animated tale by directorial quartet Alessandro Rak, Ivan Cappiello, Marino Guarnieri, and Dario Sansone. Set almost entirely on an old ship in a dystopian Naples, this story wrings together cabaret numbers, drugs, and everyone's favorite: teen marriage. Mute 17-year-old Mia is to be married off to the egotistical Salvatore, the lead singer of the ship's nightclub and an international drug kingpin. Salvatore dreams of turning Naples into the criminal enterprise capitol of the world. Naturally there's an evil stepmother named Angelica with cabaret-dancing daughters all fixated on making Mia's quiet existence as miserable as possible; Angelica is in love with Salvatore, a lust that fuels her cruelty towards Mia. In comes Primo, a policeman and former bodyguard of Mia's late father, who seems to be the only one with Mia's wellbeing at heart, and will do everything in his power to thwart Salvatore's diabolical plans for her. Robust 3D animation amidst 2D watercolor backdrops creates a beautifully surreal experience, allowing this film to appeal to our eyes as much as our hearts.

Director Biography

Neapolitan director Alessandro Rak is a versatile artist who has produced work in animation, comics, demos, and character design through his studio Rak & Scop, based in the Spanish Quarter of Naples. He is known for having a very frank and direct communication style and letting his art speak his creative expression.

Ivan Cappiello has been working as a cartoonist and illustrator since 1998, and has become the pioneer of Italian three-dimensional graphic animation. He currently works in collaboration with the MAD entertainment group and teaches animation courses at the Italian School of COMIX in Naples, Italy.

Marino Guarnieri did not realize his passion for animation until over 20 years of work as a graphic designer for mediums ranging from advertising to installations. Much like fellow animator Ivan Cappiello, Guarnieri teaches at the Italian School of Comix and works in association with MAD Entertainment, a production group that features music, animation, and documentary work out of Naples, Italy.

Along with acting and directing, Naples native Dario Sansone is a noted animator and storyboard artist. His mastery of two dimensional animation works as a perfect pair with three dimensional animator Ivan Cappiello for their second feature, Cinderella the Cat, to create their celebrated signature multi-plane visuals.
