In this playful and heartfelt road movie, a recently unemployed music teacher and his transgender father attempt to mend their tense relationship on a long trip to Norway's west coast to enter their recently deceased matriarch's final work in a major quilting competition.
A Norwegian quilting competition and an estranged father-son relationship make up the premise of Henrick Martin Daslsbakken's silly and heartfelt road movie Going West. Kasper (Benjamin Helstad, SIFF 2016's The Last King) is a recently unemployed music teacher who receives some big news from his transgender father Georg (Ingar Helge Gimle, SIFF 2012's King Curling): Kasper's late mother was an avid quilter, and her last quilt has qualified for a major quilting competition. In an attempt to mend their tense relationship, Kasper and Georg head out for the competition on the back of a rusty motorcycle. The two have odd encounters and mini-adventures along the way; at one point they visit one of Georg's old flames, and later Kasper gets caught up in a store robbery. Going West is a mostly playful affair with splashes of drama and everyday tragedy. Daslsbakken cheerfully avoids the most tired cliches associated with the road movie genre, while his approach to Georg's transgender identity is honest and refreshing. By the end, you'll find yourself wishing you could stay in this film's tender, quirky world a little longer.
Henrik Martin Dalsbakken grew up in Hamar, Norway. While he has wanted to make films all his life, he was in fact rejected from the Norwegian Film School in Lillehammer when he was 19. Since that time, Daslsbakken has become a self-taught director, producer, and screenwriter with numerous awards attached to his name. His first feature film, Returning Home (2015), premiered at the 2015 Rome Film Fest and was shortlisted as the Norwegian Oscar candidate for best foreign language film.
