In Front of Your Face

In Front of Your Face

South Korea | 2021 | 85 min | Hong Sang-soo

April 19 - 21, 2022

A melancholic but liberating drama from SIFF favorite Hong Sang-soo (Woman on the Beach, Our Sunhi) about a middle-aged former actress (Lee Hye-young) with a big secret who returns to South Korea to make amends.

It’s been many years since Sang-ok (Lee Hye-young) followed a man to Washington, D.C., leaving behind her family and renown as an actress. That relationship long expired, she’s been living in Seattle running a liquor store which she’s recently put up for sale. Now she’s back in Seoul, with barely any money to her name, to meet with a well-known director who may have a new film project for her. But Sang-ok has a secret. In his 26th feature, director Hong Sang-soo again zeroes in on exposing one character’s inner story through incidental moments, small conversations, and restrained looks that hint at deeper emotional terrain. During her visit, Sang-ok makes mild efforts to reconnect with her estranged sister and volunteers very little without her sister’s probing. She is more curious about dropping by her childhood home, which now serves as a quaint neighborhood shop, and ruminating on memories she doesn’t share with the audience. It is not until the second half of In Front of Your Face, when Sang-ok is deep into a long evening with food and drink with the filmmaker (Kwon Hae-hyo), that we come to understand why she is so compelled by his offer to make a new film and why she has been so reserved with her sister.
