In an attempt to get her Green Card, 30-year-old Romanian immigrant (Malina Manovici, Graduation), in an unnamed American city, is confronted with abuses of power on every level, forcing her to consider how far she'll go to get what she wants.
Think what it feels like to enter a new country on a temporary visa and try to fit in. However, you cannot fit in without papers and you cannot get papers unless you follow the Green Card guidelines. Lemonade begins with 30-year-old Romanian Mara at a US airport waiting for her 10-year-old son Dragos to arrive from Romania. Mara has been living on a temporary visa and has recently married Daniel, an American who works in construction. In her quiet way, Mara has followed the Green Card guidelines. But as her situation intensifies, a palpable feeling of unease builds up, and her plans veer off in drastically unexpected directions. Faced with abuses of power on every level, Mara is forced into action and into answering a dark question about herself—how far will she go to get what she wants? Debut director Ioana Uricaru's film deals directly with xenophobia, exploitation, and abuse of power. Moreover, she demands her character answer for herself as well as examines societal expectations. Lemonade stars Malina Manovici (2016's Graduation) in the lead role, and it was produced by Palme d'Or winner Cristian Mungiu (2007's 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days).
Ioana Uricaru grew up in Romania during the communist dictatorship and violent transition of the nation. Originally, she was a student of biology at the University of Bucharest before moving to Los Angeles to receive a Masters of Fine Arts. Along with filmmaking, she is a screenwriter and teacher at Middlebury College.
