India | 2017 | 111 minutes | Siddhartha Jatla

As a devout Brahmin, Mumbai rickshaw driver Shukla has never so much as lusted after a woman. As he is wedded to an extremely shy young bride, the two struggle to discover love, connection, and intimacy in the stifling confines of his family's one room chawl.

Raised in Mumbai in the tradition of the Brahmin caste, rickshaw driver Shukla (Saharsh Kumar Shukla) has never experienced romance with a woman prior to his impending arranged marriage. As his family weds him to a beautiful but extremely shy girl named Lakshmi (Taneea Rajaway), they both find themselves struggling for intimacy while living with his family in the confines of their one room chawl. Only a wall of suitcases provides them privacy from Shukla's overbearing mother (Aparna Upadhyay) and silent father (Loknath Tiwari). To complicate matters further, his sister Rupa (Hima Singh) moves back in as her own struggling marriage takes a traumatic turn. Longing to discover love, Shukla and Lakshmi, two total strangers, must find a way to know and love each other personally amidst the stifling lack of personal space. Through its claustrophobic framing, nuanced acting performances, and conspicuous long pauses in dialogue, the film brilliantly underscores the new couple's frustrations and growing pains in trying to connect and to live for themselves and each other. Love and Shukla provides an evocative portrait of the material realities of love and family in an overcrowded metropolis of 18 million plus.
